Unpacking the Motivations of the Monkey
While they were sitting there, the question was: why the puppy? Some assumed loneliness or some form of care-giving instinct motivated the monkey. The fact is that some primate species exist in which this animal looks after other youngsters and even young of a completely different species. Therefore, it cannot be ruled out that this is part of the natural protective instincts of this monkey.
The second possible reason was that the monkey recently lost a young one of its own. Perhaps it just wanted to fill up that void left with this puppy. It seemed that the monkey needed some form of companionship, and in this case, the puppy had exactly come to meet that need. It seemed less of an accident and more something that sprang from a deep-seated need to connect.
The owner was interested in the possibilities that had arisen. Mystery had morphed into interspecies empathy, a passing glimpse through the confusion of the animals’ behavior. The monkey-puppy relationship was beyond an oddity but the presentation of power in companionship.
